Last year left-handed pitcher Michael Roth was a situational guy the Gamecocks used out of the pen, now he’s a likely All-American that continues to dominate opponents. Roth struck out eight and allowed just a run on three hits in 7 2/3 innings as the Gamecocks defeated Vanderbilt 3-1 in Game 1 of a huge SEC series with major national implications. Reliever Matt Price tossed 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief work.
For Vanderbilt highly touted RHP Sonny Gray struck out 7 while also throwing 7 2/3 innings.
